Nobody Knows

Nobody Knows
Nobody owns this river, nobody owns this sky
No one knows who owns this valley, no one owns the by and by
This great and gleaming twilight, this wind, these polished stones
Your fleet and agile spirit, my old and broken bones
Nobody knows, nobody knows
Nobody knows what it is you’re facing, nobody knows what it is you fear
Nobody knows why it is you’re laughing, no one knows what it is you hear
No one knows how far your journey, no one knows how dark the night
No one knows how deep the valley, no one knows how hard the fight
Nobody knows, nobody knows, nobody knows
But everybody cares if the paint is peeling, everybody cares if the stove won't light
Everybody cares if the fence is broken, everybody cares if the dog won’t fight
Everybody cares if the floor ain’t level, everybody cares if the car won’t start
Everybody cares if the creek is rising, everybody cares about your broken heart
Everybody cares, everybody cares, but nobody knows
Mothers lost their children, and fathers lost their way
Farmers lost their fields, and workers lost their pay
Brothers lost their courage, and lovers lost their will
Fighters lost their spirit, and dreamers are searching still
Nobody knows how this happened
Nobody knows how we lost our way
Nobody knows why we fell silent
Nobody knows why we turned and walked away
But everybody cares if the fields are teeming, everybody cares if the bins are full
Everybody cares if the grid is humming, everybody cares about the bears and the bulls
Everybody cares how you made your fortune, everybody cares if you lose your mind
Everybody cares, everybody cares, everybody cares, everybody cares...
But nobody knows

What's the Rush
03:10
|
|||
What’s The Rush?
There’s a flea on a dog and a tick on a deer
A tiny bird on a big antelope
The rancher is flexing, the farmer’s spittin’ up beer
And the waitress has given up hope
The tile is broken and the table is scratched
Dead leaves blow in from the door
Every word’s been spoken every scheme’s been hatched
I don’t have to be here no more
Oh baby I’m leaving you, I’ve got a three day ride to the coast
Of all the places that I’ve been through, I’m gonna miss this town the most
They have fish in the river, deer in the glen, wild birds parade in the brush
I’ll be back, baby, I don’t know when...
Honey, what’s the rush?
This was a prairie town when I grew up
Full of arrowheads and dinosaur bones
Now children play in piles of paper cups
Plastic straws and cellular phones
At family tables and friendly bars
Where I once had a seat
There’s fearful calls for building walls
And people sleeping in the streets
Oh baby I’m leaving you, this town has lost its charm
Baby, I’m leaving you, before I come to any more harm
You have fish in the river, deer in the glen, wild birds parade in the brush
I’ll be back, baby, I don’t know when...
Honey, what’s the rush?
My girl came to me the other day and said “Honey we’ve been together twenty years...
Ain’t it time we got married?" Wait...what?
Now, I’ve done my best, I’ve done my worst
I’ve lived and died by the sword
I’ve finished last and I’ve finished first
I’ve been a peasant and I’ve been a lord
I’m so tired and that ain’t bad
You don’t live forever I know
This life is a dream that I think I had
Now I think it’s time to go
Oh baby I’m leaving you, Saint Peter stands by the gate
They tell me that the line moves fast, and no-one has to wait
They got fish in the river, deer in the glen, wild birds parade in the brush
I’ll be back, baby, I don’t know when...
Honey, what’s the rush?

First Bird to Sing

First Bird To Sing
Sleep, brother close your eyes
The flesh wears out long before the spirit dies
What did your young life bring?
It brought laughter in the night
And then
The first bird to sing
Brother, forgot to close the door
Was it carelessness or hope, we’ll never know for sure
Now harsh words wound
And salt tears sting
But in my heart he’ll always be
The First Bird to Sing
Some people have some things that they will never show
To others who they’ve come to think
Just do not care to know
I have memories of you
That I will not let go
I may soon be out of debt
But I will ever owe
Mother put up a good good fight
She kept the wolves from the door
And held her babies tight
He was a would-be villain or a would-be king
But in my heart he’ll always be
The first bird to sing

'Til It's Time To Go
04:17
|

‘Til It’s Time To Go
We were all hope and expectation as that summer day began
And you and I agreed to meet in the grove down where the river ran
I ran out the back door, and though the path was hard to find
I climbed that hill in front of me, and left that little town behind
Each day was filled with stories of sorrow from the war
And at night there were fresh hardships left at each and every door
So we clung for consolation to our ancient forest glen
Between the future we didn’t know and the past as it was then
You can walk, walk, walk the wild earth or you can fly high above it
You can look for the hidden light you can search high and low
On our journey far and near, the path will always lead us right back here
Where you can hold me in your arms,
And I can hold you close
Until it’s time to go
Now there’s twilight thrown everywhere, and a breeze stirs the tree
Window lamps flicker here and there as the sun sets on you and me
Memories of long ago, reminders of me and her
Remember how the sun would glow on the children that we once were
You can walk, walk, walk the wild earth or you can fly high above it
You can gather around you all that you love and know
As the sun goes down on this peaceful valley town
You can hold me in your arms
Until it’s time to go…

Dragonfly In A Jar

Dragonfly In A Jar
From the North Atlantic ocean to the South China sea
From the tall corn of Kansas to the flowers of Brittany
From the hamlets of Nova Scotia to the green Scottish lea
From the time that you were born to the miles between you and me
There’s a door there and I walk through
There’s a wall there and I break through
If you want to save the world from all the struggle and the strife
It's hard to do from where you are
Between the hidden and the seen we’re all stuck here in between
Like a dragonfly in a jar
From the cold arctic circle to the blue coral reef
From the harsh glare of self doubt to the warm glow of belief
From the poles to the equator to the floor up from the sea
From the rainforest to the desert, from Mecca to Calvary
There’s a wall there and I break through
There’s a war there and I fight too
If you want to save the world from all the struggle and the strife
It's hard to do from where you are
If you’re a husband or a wife you’ve got to save your own life
‘Cause you ain’t good for nothing as you are
From the straight edge of this table to the dog curled at your feet
From the truth that you tell to the secrets that you keep
From the restless sky above you to the path you tread below
From the friends you made along the way who will hate to see you go
There’s a home here and I walk in
There’s an ocean here, and I can’t swim
But thank god that I can fly, and I hope that by and by
I can handle all the struggle and the strife
If I falter pick me up, if I venture wish me luck
That I can save my own life
If you want to save the world from all the struggle and the strife
It's hard to do from where you are
Between the hidden and the seen we’re all stuck here in between
Like a dragonfly in a jar
Like a dragonfly in a jar

I Let Go
02:58
|

I Let Go
You point the finger but that ain’t fair
Babe, it was you that put it there
I was in love I closed my eyes
You took out the truth
And put in lies
I held on...as I watched you slip away
I held on...there was nothing that I could say
I held on…
And now I let go
Time was you took a man at his word
Time was you could believe the things you heard
I’m not nostalgic
And I’m not mean
I’m just tired of this scene
I held on as I watched you slip away
I held on there was nothing that I could say
I held on…
And now I let go
You know how sometimes
People who live the way we do
Sometimes we lose sight of what is real
Ah, baby, I do it too
One finds salvation in his pains
One pumps relief into his veins
One drags a pen across the page
One hides his fears
And shows his age
I held on...for as long as I could
I held on...‘cause I believed that you would
I held on...
And now I let go

Don’t Take Love Lightly (MAGA Girl)
You can tell me that the sun won’t rise in the morning
Tell me that the river’s gonna roll uphill
You can tell me that the wind wont blow but one way
I’ll believe you, I will
You can tell me that the farm’s going under
Tell me that this dog’s no good
Tell what I’m hearing ain’t thunder
Tell me what I’m feelin’ ain’t good
But in this age of silent rage when there’s trouble at your door
Don’t do to me what you done to him
Don’t do what you’ve done before
Darlin' look me straight in the eye
And say you won't take love lightly no more
You can coast on the flat, you can glide in the hilly
Spit polish your Chevy or your Ford
You can live off the fat you can go and get silly
Follow Satan or follow the lord
You can drive up and down main street
Behind your flags and your guns
But won’t you look like a grievous fool
When all your days are done
‘Cause in the haze of your glory days when there’s trouble at your door
Don’t do to me what you done to him
Don’t do what you’ve done before
Darling look me straight in the eye
And say you won't take love lightly no more
As you always loved to tell me
Nothing ventured, nothing gained
Of all the things you said back then
Just one thought remains
You never did your homework
You never paid the bill
You never told the simple truth
Looks like you never will
Whatever happened to the tears in your eyes
Whatever happened to the blood on the floor
Whatever happened to “my love never dies”
Whatever happened to “I can’t take anymore”
Whatever ill-fate might befall you
If ever sweet grace picks you up
Whoever may or may not call you
Should ever love fill your cup
In the gloom of your lonely room
If I show up at your door
Don’t do to me what you done to him
Don’t do what you’ve done before
Darling look me straight in the eye
And say you won’t take love lightly no more

Grandfather Walks

Grandfather Walks
When I look in your eyes I see the story there told
You drift in and out of the shadows
To my ears and eyes the story never gets old
Of grandfather’s walks in the meadow
He had a satchel for berries and a knife for his bread
And a fan should the day turn hot
A stick for his walking and a hat for his head
And in his pocket a blue forget-me-not
There were three for his daughters and one for his wife
And one for the boy never came
And a crown for his storied impossible life
And one for the man who bore his name
Weathered shoes he pulled on when he got out of bed
A leather pouch for his bottle of wine
And baggy pants pockets for the books that he read
And poems…he could recite every line
The heart is an infinite whole rising moon
And wisdom’s a soft falling rain
Youth is a faint and a faraway tune
And time is a slow moving train
So think of him when the sun rises hot
When setting the table or tying a knot
When holding a book that seems bound by the ages
Or finding a flower pressed flat by the pages
Sometimes in my mind my grandfather talks
But most times…grandfather walks
From Stockholm to London from Rome to Madrid
But always back home to France
His head full of stories of things that he did
His life left to wonder and chance
A path through the forest that he walked every day
His young daughters trailing behind
To the edge of the field where the trees fell away
To the edge of the untroubled mind
The heart is an infinite whole rising moon
Wisdom’s a soft falling rain
Youth is a faint and a faraway tune
And time is a slow moving train
A trip to the well to draw deep from the earth
Or you glance at mirror and discover your worth
Or plan a trip back to your favorite spot
To find your grandfather’s blue forget-me-not
Sometimes in my mind my grandfather talks
But most times…grandfather walks
The heart is an infinite whole rising moon
The heart is an infinite whole rising moon
The heart is an infinite whole rising moon
The heart is an infinite whole rising moon
